Movie Poster Final

A while back I mentioned qualities of posters I'd like to use in my own poster idea. I picked out this poster I'd like to analyze.

One quick look at the sizes of the faces of this poster depict power relations. Based on the size of what appears to be the main character’s face, he is much weaker than many of the surrounding faces. Not even all of his face is shown; half of it is covered up by the other faces. However, though in another language, the title is obviously “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” In the story, Dorian Gray’s portrait of himself ages while he remains young. Based on this, I’m assuming the main character in the poster is Dorian Gray and the faces covering his are the evolution of his portrait as it ages. These faces are a part of him yet they are more powerful than he is. That power is mortality.

Another idea to touch on is how these faces all stare in Dorian Gray’s direction. While the story is about Dorian Gray, these faces are constantly haunting him. They are both separate and a part of him. At the end of the story Dorian slashes the hideous painting of himself. What’s left is a beautiful painting on the wall and a horrid man lying on the ground with a knife in his heart.

Poster Brainstorming Project

I really like this poster's use of asymmetry and fading of multiple images into one object. I also like the color and use of space. The image is filled with images but still gives an empty and gritty feeling.

I like how the boards in this poster separate the image and how the title is placed cleanly and visibly on these boards. The colors of the boards contrast well with the figure behind them so that he is still very visible.

I like the simple use of negative space and color in this poster. Though few colors are present, the vibrancy along with the figure in the negative space is very pleasing to look at.

For my own poster I'd like to essentially combine these three posters. By using the distorted faces placed behind a form of bars overlayed with a silhouetted figure, I believe I can create a piece that symbolizes a strong sense of transformation in society. The assignment is called "The world will be transformed by..." I believe a good answer for this is "loss" or "isolation." The movie would be about losing oneself and having to start anew. The character would essentially be a shell of his former self, trapped, searching for a way out.
